In Anime and manga style artwork originating in Japan, futanari basically is defined as a female character with a penis. This seems to be a commonly accepted form of pornographic artwork in this genre. This is probably because within the fantasy realm of drawn pornography these female characters are viewed as actual females with no other masculine traits, physicality’s, or origins besides the fact that they have a cock between their legs, as opposed to reality where hermaphrodites or transsexuals have physical origins as men.

Within the realm of futanari sometimes the phallic member the women possess are not penises but enlarged clitorises, which are often used in lesbian sex scenes. Sometimes the women have full male genitalia with a penis and scrotum. In other instances there is a combination with both a penis and a vagina and the scrotum is typically absent in this scenario, and this is often seen in characters with the enlarged clitorises.

Other very crude terms that refer to futanari are “dickgirl” and “shemale.” And interesting enough, these terms are much more commonly used for this genre of hentai. However these terms are typically used without care or by outsiders that do not distinguish the difference. A precise depiction of a futanari character would depict them also having a vagina, where as a shemale is a male that possesses traits of a woman. Make sense? Ofcourse not ^_^
